Guardians of the Future: Choosing Life and Resilience at Winston Standard

      In the open courtyard of Winston Standard Secondary School, a circle of young men stood in a moment of profound transparency. This was the Youth Empowerment Conference, a space created by the URS Performers Initiative to tackle the heavy shadows that often loom over the journey from adolescence to adulthood. The topic was one that demands the utmost integrity and compassion: the management of stress and the critical prevention of drug misuse and self-harm.
     The conversation was striking in its honesty. These learners did not speak from a place of judgment, but from a place of witness. While they proudly shared that they had not succumbed to drug misuse themselves, they spoke with gravity about the peers they have seen lose their way. They described the "day-to-day challenges" of youth the pressure to perform, the weight of expectations, and the search for relief in all the wrong places. By giving these young men a platform to share their observations and the advice they give to their colleagues, we reinforced the value of respect respect for one's body, one's mind, and one's future.
     One of the most powerful segments of the day addressed the tragic reality of why some young people feel their only option is to end their lives. With deep accountability to their well-being, our speakers moved beyond the problem to focus on the possible measures and life-saving alternatives. We explored healthy outlets for stress:

  • Open Dialogue: Breaking the silence and seeking mentorship before a problem feels insurmountable.
  • Strategic Goal-Setting: Using the methods we discussed in other communities  to focus on long-term hope rather than short-term pain.
  • Community Vigilance: Being a "brother’s keeper" and recognizing the signs of distress in those around them.
       The youth at Winston Standard reached a powerful consensus: while stress is an inevitable part of life, drug misuse is a false exit. They acknowledged that "many options exist to handle stress," and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
The URS Performers Initiative left Winston Standard with a renewed sense of purpose. By equipping these young men with the emotional intelligence to navigate their darkest days, we are ensuring that their "period of youth" is not a time of loss, but a season of building unshakeable resilience. We are helping them understand that their worth is infinite, and their lives are the most valuable assets our community possesses.
